I am a huge cycling fan, and many analogies I make are related to cycling and sports.

One analogy that I often use with friends and clients is that of a cycling manager who has managed to elevate local cyclists to the elite pro peloton of cycling. Patrick Lefevere comes to mind. His riders won. National titles, world titles, the classics, all the way to wins in the Tour de France. He certainly has a gift for managing cyclists: helping them to master their talent and excel in their sport.

Now put Lefevere in charge of a third category Cyprus football team and tell him “okay, you did a great job managing these young cyclists, so now is your chance to really shine and take our football team to the next level. Let’s go to the UEFA Champions League”.

He is going to look at you as if you are crazy. He knows that if he accepts the job, he will inevitably fail.
